Recently, the national key research and development plan project "Broadband Communication and New Network Application Demonstration" project - "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Super Optical Network", held a ceremony for the completion of the phased laying and the commencement of the Dongguan-Shenzhen section, marking the world's longest multi-optical network. The construction of the core fiber optic cable project is completed. The project was led by Guangdong University of Technology, and participated by Sun Yat-sen University, China Telecom (601728), Fiberhome, Shenzhen Aixun and other units.
With the emergence of new services such as 5G mobile communications, the bandwidth utilization of conventional single-mode optical fibers is approaching the limit, making it difficult to support the continuous growth of communications. Multi-core optical fiber transmission technology can realize multi-channel signal transmission in a single optical fiber and double the optical fiber transmission capacity, which is the mainstream trend of future broadband network communication. In 2019, the world's first multi-core optical cable with a total length of 6.29 kilometers was laid, proving the feasibility and application prospects of multi-core optical fibers.
The super optical network in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with a total length of more than 160 kilometers, connects Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and adopts Fiberhome's own space-division multiplexing optical fiber and cable technology to create the world's longest-distance and largest-capacity space-division multiplexing optical communication" superhighway". During the construction of the project, the research group made attempts and breakthroughs from the deployment and construction of optical cables, on-site fusion of multi-core optical fibers, and post-system maintenance, and completed the mid-term laying and fusion of multi-core optical cables over 60km. The 16km multi-core optical cable carried out a live demonstration of the mixed transmission of 200Tb/s offline system and 1Tb/s real-time system. As a task undertaking unit, Fiberhome has conquered the preparation technology and cable-forming technology of 7-core single-mode optical fiber and fan-in and fan-out devices. It also completed the laying and splicing of multi-core optical cables together with China Telecom, and achieved the goal of developing 400G high-speed transmission equipment with a high-speed signal demodulation bandwidth of 200Gb/s on schedule.
The completion of the mid-phase laying of the super optical network in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area marks a new step for the commercialization of multi-core optical fibers. Fiberhome will also continue to develop optical fiber and cable technology, continue to tap the potential of optical fibers, and promote the scale of multi-core optical fiber products. application and contribute to the development of optical communication.
