For termination and maintenance purposes, branch optical cables facilitate the independent wiring or branching of each optical fiber. Branch optical cables are divided into three different structures: 2.8mm subunits are suitable for applications with heavy traffic; 2.4mm subunits are suitable for applications with normal traffic; and 2.0mm subunits are suitable for applications with less traffic. These branch optical cables can be laid in pipes under the freezing point lines between buildings, in the upward riser shafts within the building, under the floor of the computer room, and in fiber-to-the-desktop. Figure 6-22 shows the structure of an 8-core branch optical cable. [1]
