The IRIS submarine cable was first announced in 2019, with the construction and laying of the cable taking place between 2021 and 2022. The total length of the submarine cable is about 1,700 kilometers. It starts from the southwest of Iceland and connects to Galway (Galway) in the west of Ireland. The system has 6 fiber pairs with a total system capacity of 108Tbps. Each fiber pair provides 18Tbps. SubCom is in charge supply and installation.

In November this year, the IRIS submarine cable has been accepted by SubCom and handed over to Farice, whose technical team will merge the submarine cable with the Farice network. Farice also owns and operates two other submarine cable systems linking Iceland to Europe, FARICE-1 and DANICE.
